Ethical Public Domain

COMMUNIA Workshop, Vilnius, March 31, 2008: Debate of Questionable Practices

Information

Making a Living

Vygantas Vejas asks, How can I make a living as an artist? How might creative people make a living if creative works are in the Public Domain. Kokį išgyvenimo būdą isivaizduotum, jei visos autorinės teisės priklausytų visuomenei?

Making a living as an artist is very good and possible
To me i see this as talent and in the 21st century, Talent Identification is the key to success so people who discover their talents and use them perfectly like the musicians, footballers and so on they rely make a living.

So Paulo Coelho is making a living by giving. Is that a good way of making a living? Yes , I think so. Is that posible for every artists (scientist, dancer, musician ... ) I am not sure but I feel it is a good model. But I imagine same, or similar scheme could be applicable to other creative endeavors.
I mean I had always had the idea that if a writer writes something , his main need is to be heard, so he can have an impact on his audience. If he gates his work with copyright isn't that kind of building of walls against potential reader ( book byers)?

From this page http://cyrescafe.net/blog/storyteller/pirate-coe

In 1999, best-selling author Paulo Coelho, who wrote “The Alchemist,” was failing in Russia. That year he sold only about 1,000 books, and his Russian publisher dropped him. But after he found another, Coelho took a radical step. On his own Web site, launched in 1996, he posted a digital Russian copy of “The Alchemist.

With no additional promotion, print sales picked up immediately. Within a year he sold 10,000 copies; the next year around 100,000. By 2002 he was selling a total of a million copies of multiple titles. Today, Coelho’s sales in Russian are over 10 million and growing.

Paulo Coelho makes a living and he supports public domain, or maybe the better description is open access. http://paulocoelhoblog.com/

I dont care what is the name if the public can use it freely.
But of course pure Public Domain is the bes choice. the question is how to make it more acceptable for wide masses of users?
Maybe Paulo is pointing in good direction.
